CEMENT FLOORING: ROCK-SOLID CHOICE
Let's face it, dogs aren't exactly kind to floors. And what if you're like Annette Stollman, who has eight pooches roaming (and, yest, running) around the house?
Install cement floors, complete with radiant heating. Literally indestructible, cement floors are the perfect answer to canine or kiddie chaos.
Cut into 2-by-2-foot squares, the floors had a transparent acid stain
applied several times before they were grouted. A chemical was then mixed with the minerals in the concrete, creating a reaction that makes it look like tile. "It's an economical process, but it's also time-consuming and labor-intensive," says Judith Landau of Timbercraft Homes.
"However, it's worth it - the floors are easy to maintain."
By adding radiant heat, Annette
reaps the dual benefits of low maintenance and comfort. The look complements the natural wood used throughout the house. Andy Constan of Bluefish Builders says that cement floors are becoming increasingly popular simply because they're indestructible. Which is reason enough, even if you don't have 32 paws racing through the house every day.
